A year sign belongs to a year pillar
The Chinese zodiac pairs twelve animals with earthly branches in a repeating cycle. A traditional year pillar also includes a heavenly stem, which adds five-element and polarity context and contributes to a sixty-year cycle.
This is a broad year-pillar lens. It is not the same calculation as a Zi Wei Life Palace and should not be used as a fixed personality label.
Why January 1 is not enough
Traditional year boundaries can follow the lunar calendar or a tradition-specific solar-term convention. A person born near the boundary may receive a different year pillar under a different rule.
AstroEW uses the year pillar returned by its calculation library and shows the traditional lunar date in the chart report. It does not silently replace the rule with a simple Gregorian lookup.
How to check a surprising result
- Confirm the recorded local date and time.
- Check the city and historical time-zone offset.
- Read the method note for the library and year-boundary convention.
- If the date is near a boundary, compare the two plausible readings and keep the uncertainty in your notes.
Make the boundary useful
- Record the Chinese zodiac year sign and the exact year-pillar fields shown by the chart.
- Write what the year-sign description helps you notice and what it leaves out.
- Compare it with the Western Sun sign and one Zi Wei palace without merging the labels.
- Keep the question that remains useful after the boundary detail is understood.
