The twelve Western zodiac signs.

The familiar starting point for many overseas readers. Learn the seasonal sign, element, and modality, then keep the Sun sign in proportion: it is one doorway into Western astrology, not a complete birth chart.

How the sign system works

In the tropical Western zodiac, the twelve signs are arranged around the ecliptic and anchored to the seasonal cycle. Each sign is associated with an element and a modality. Fire, Earth, Air, and Water describe a broad style of energy; Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable describe how a quality begins, stabilizes, or changes.

AstroEW currently shows the Sun sign calculated by its chart library as an introductory Western layer. We do not present it as a full Western natal chart: a complete reading could also consider the Moon, planets, houses, angles, and aspects.

How to use a Sun sign responsibly

  1. Use it as a vocabulary for a style or tendency, not a complete identity.
  2. Compare it with your own experience and the situation you are actually in.
  3. Keep the sign separate from the Chinese zodiac year pillar and from Zi Wei Dou Shu stars.
  4. Use it to ask a better question, never to make a high-stakes decision for yourself or another person.
